a man sits in a corner, behind a pillar near a bank. the many lives, lavishly walking with food in their bellies and education in their minds, forget the neglected needs of the man. you see him sit there, with his hands trembling and his eyes glossy with exhaustion. he did not like being there anymore than you do. he did not ask for the pain he bears. he wakes up without a home, wondering what he had done wrong to the universe; wondering what the universe had done him wrong. you walk past and you fidget. should i give him a dollar? what would the dollar fix for him? nothing. it's not enough to feed him. not enough to buy him shelter. but you smile as you hand the man the money, because you know it is not the number written on the paper he sees, it is the art of kindness you bring to him. you are grateful, and so is he.
- and sometimes a smile is more than enough
